Buying a Helmet : Important Things To Remember When Buying a Motorcycle Helmet
/When it comes to motorcycling today there is so much protective equipment involved that one cannot help but think: do I really require all this? Well, one thing is for sure, you certainly need a good helmet.
Here we will discuss about the most important things you should consider when you are purchasing a helmet that will do the job for you. What kind of helmet is better? What things I should consider when choosing the right one? Does it need to look decent? Let’s get some valuable information and make our motorcycle touring much safer.
Certain people, as well as many salesmen, say that purchasing the most expensive one is best. But it is not always right! Fundamentally you want to go with a helmet that you will be happy to wear every time when you ride a bike and is comfortable and offer sufficient protection. These instructions will surely make us all cleverer when it comes to selecting and purchasing a new helmet.
Here are some tips you should consider if you want to buy a perfect helmet for yourself:
- First, set a budget for your new helmet based on the level of riding you do. Cost is usually reflected in the materials used and number of features. For example, a helmet made of carbon fiber will naturally cost more than polycarbonate helmet.
- When viewing helmets, be sure to look for the safety specifications from DOT, ECE22.05, SNELL, etc. Helmets with these certifications have gone through numerous tests and have passed a typical level of protection.
- When choosing a helmet, the fit is one of the most important things to consider. Be sure to measure your head first with a soft measuring tape to get your head size. A motorcycle helmet with proper fitting, will fit comfortable on your head with a little movement.
- Proper vision is another important piece of problem when choosing the right helmet. Be sure to try on the helmet with the spectacles you wear to assure that they will fit in the eye port with an adequate vision.
Queensland Helmet Laws
In the past, motorcycle riders on the Queensland roads were required to wear a helmet that are according to the Australian standard AS1698 or AS/NZS1698. Due to road safety reasons, all motorcycle riders on the Queensland roads are required to wear permitted motorcycle helmet that is securely fastened and fitted on their head. Restricting the available helmets to those that met the Australian standards, limited the range of helmets available and sometimes the sizing was unfitting, especially for people with larger heads.
Pillion and sidecar passengers are also required to wear helmets that are according to the ECE 22.05 standard, in addition to helmets fulfilling with the Australian standards. On the other hand, if you break rules, a fine of $341 and 3 demerit points imposed to passengers or motorcycle riders who don’t follow the rules of motorcycle helmet. Points for double demerit still apply for second or subsequent offences within 1 year period of failing to wear a helmet.
To support enforcement activities and to make sure that helmets meet the ECE 22.05 standard, helmets that are approved under this standard must show a label verifying compliance with the standard. The rules governing the ECE 22.05 standard require the display of such labels
